Over the years,
allegations of plagiarism have been rife in Hindi films. But by licencing Roy
Orbison’s Pretty Woman and using it
in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Karan Johar, the
film’s producer, set a trend and conveyed a message to his contemporaries and
future producers – “Do it right. Buy the rights.”
And, to everyone’s
delight, the cover, which was penned by Javed Akhtar and composed by Shankar
Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, was pretty good.
The track, which
was five minutes and 55 seconds long, was rendered by Shankar and rapper Ravi ‘Rags’
Khote.
